day 000 Sunday, June 20, 2010 Doing some packing. Put the new house numbers in the card catalog, bottom right. Got a bucket for the gardenia plant. Mentioned the impending noise to the lion house. Having the gang [FDN] over for Schupfnudeln. Last supper. Larry will take the old heater out tomorrow and will have a guy start trenching for the concrete. He will also order the 3 french windows. I will call Kevin and ask for sample addresses of Landmark and Presidential shingles. day 001 Monday, June 21, 2010 Larry coming over at 8am. Probably not taking the furnace out today, but possibly trenching. We will see. Larry and Patrick did some marking of the foundation going under the house. Laid some planking downstairs outside the mech room. Asked Kerri and I to remove stuff in mech room against the wall opposite the heaters. Heaters likely to be removed tomorrow. That's fine cause it's plenty hot today. Gave Larry a key and will give him another tomorrow. Larry also drilled some tiny holes in the dining room to line up the piers with the first floor per plans. Larry will trench near the Hollywood Juniper last so we can see if Mike wants to rescue it. Larry left a copy of the 3 window order for me to check and sign. Had Jenny, then Marilyn, then Jonas over to look at the model. All thought the model and ideas looked and sounded good and were excited for us. Spent some time digging up the Gardenia root ball. Will continue tomorrow. Jonas had some advice on the Gardenia, the pine, the cypress, and the hollywood juniper. day 002 Tuesday, June 22, 2010 Bunch of guys showed up. Work to be done under the house today and likely outside along the wall. Gave Larry a front door key. - Heater is completely out and in the breezeway, the top of the heater shelf is on the back lawn and man is it heavy. The basement is seriously tore up and lots of dirt down there. Glad that's not my job. Smells like fresh dirt. I would be very curious if there's any old Cohen crap in there, horseshoes, bricks and the like. Everyone was well gone by the time I got back, but Larry stopped by to check in on a 4x4 on top of a pier deal. He also said that some of the piers are deeper than previously thought, which is good. I mentioned the gardenia, and he asked if I needed a tool to remove it, and the other contractors took their's with them so Larry had me follow him to his house where he loaned me two of his picks. With one of the pics, the gardenia was out in minutes. I got the trash bucket ready, and moved it in, in place in the backyard, only to then realize that it was too small. When Kerri got back, I ran over to Home Cheapo and bought the bucket I had wanted to get, but was talked out of. Got it in that bucket with Kerri's help, watered it, got the tools away, had Kerri check the water and called it a night. day 003 Wednesday, June 23, 2010 Kerri talked to Italo about the truss permits. Also, she will go to the city about procedure while he's away (agent). What got us started on this is what happens if he's out of town and we need a signature. More work under the house, lot's of concrete and dirt removed. Rebar left in the curb with orange cones (foundation?). Showed the model to Mr. Doan. (tuesday or wednesday:) went to look at some comp. addresses that have the Landmark 30 year roofing... Looks okay. I guess at this point it will have to do. The price difference is just not as compelling, but the look of the Presidential TL sure is. Mr. Doan's suggestions were: -set up electrical for IF you wanted a jacuzzi -if not adding AC, or doing it soon, make the big window operable (a window that opens) -at least 2 attic fans -closets, the bigger the better. -lydia's room: change the closets to the whole of the opposite wall, and move the windows appropriately. an interesting idea, if too late. -run as much extra electrical to bathrooms and everywhere -babysit/shoulder jocket the electricians -use solid state materials in the bathrooms (plastic siding etc) rather than tile (maintenance). if you have to do tile, then get someone good. -get presidential tile. it looks really good. -electrical. get the biggest panel w/ as many circuits as possible -do seamless getters. -consider stucco on 2nd floor as the siding doesn't weather well. day 004 Thursday, June 24, 2010 Kerri didn't make it to city hall today. Mech room/crawlspace. Some rebar work. Cleaned under foyer. I crawled in there with my skateboard and saw the dig outs where the footings are going. Backyard: (2) 18"x18", 12" deep holes ofr Deck Posts. One in the red tile (I had Kerri rescue me a piece so if I need to match the tile...) and one in the grass. Patio: Trench for Concrete Pier Kitchen/Dining Ext. Trees removed between roses and Last juniper topiary. Hollywood Juniper is gone, not a problem per anyone. Trench dug under house in 6 places., in the process, the plumbing main got inadvertainly cut, then repaired at ~3pm by John/Plumber. Some rebar under kitchen patio closest to garage. The heaters are gone. There's one pipe still here. There's also some lumber, I imagine for concrete forms? Later that night it started to drizzle, so Kerri covered it with tarps and picnic tablecloths. I was working on painting a model of the Roudabush's cottage when I ran out of red paint, so I went to the greenhouse to get more, and I feel in the Deck hole in the grass, and knocked the wind out of me. My left knee had already been bothering me, now they both are. I'm a little dinged up, and more than I have been in a while, but not so bad. day 005 Friday, June 25, 2010 Just Larry and Patrick today. They showed up a little late, not sure what they were procuring earlier in the day. Did lots of rebar today, inside and outside. On of the exterior footing trenches meets an interior trench under the kitchen/dining jamb and the cat has been having a lot of fun making circuits through the basement/trench/back door route, so I closed that off from the outside. I also screwed a board over the cat door. Kerri had taped it closed, and he kept working around it and getting out. I also skateboarded around and looked at the trenches. I'll check it against the plan, but I think all the digging is done. Some of the rebar has epoxy holding it in place. Larry told Kerri he needs the dining cleared sooner rather than later, and that he might be pouring concrete Wednesday, June 30, 2010. Also, he may be ready to start demo-ing the 2nd floor on 7/5 or 7/7. Looks like he's ahead of schedule... so it's time to move and get everything out of here... Still feeling a little beat up over the fall, but not so bad. Larry wants the dining room cornerscleared by Monday 6/28/2010, and the rest of the dining room and the attic above the dining room cleared by Monday 7/5/2010. The last I heard, he was planning to ordering concrete on Wednesday day 006 Saturday, June 26, 2010 We [fdkzl] went out to a family reunion in Lodi day 007 Sunday, June 27, 2010 Packed. Gren and Alison came over to help. I fell asleep at 6:30pm day 008 Monday, June 28, 2010 Kerri had a heck of a time at City Hall. Larry and F will have to go tomorrow at 7:30am to sort it out (trusses and Larry being able to sign permits, etc. while F is out of town. Larry is planning on pouring the foundation on Thursday. Z and I crawled under the house and checked progress. On the outside, the rebar is all wire tied together and ready to pour. Inside, almost all the rebar is wire tied, and there is a form built out of 2x8s or larger to hold the concrete poured in, possibly from the outside. day 009 Tuesday, June 29, 2010 Larry and F went to city hall. they had f presign a bunch of blank permits. Larry worked on the foundation I think, but I didn't check. I will crawl under the house Wednesday night because they are still planning on pouring concrete Thursday. The stucco guy (Clyde?) called Larry and said he wasn't busy, so he came by to work on the 1st floor windows. He took out stucco around the windows and it was really loud and really dusty, but no problem. Progress. He cut the stucco out for the den (southwood side), the main living room 6x12, the living room window (southwood side, closest to brinley) all four of the garage windows, and the den window (backyard), but didn't get to the downstairs bath, none of the three kitchen windows, not the dining room, not the living room closest to the den. Mike and Saul came down and got a lot done in Z&L's room and we got 2 of 3 sections (the heavy and the light) to storage. day 010 Wednesday, June 30, 2010 Kirk/Stucco came by at 7:45am. He did more on the backyard den window, and the downstairs bathroom. He also did the living room window closest to the dining room, but he didn't do others because they were too close to the concrete trench. The windows he has remaining to do are the 3 kitchen windows, the (E) dining room window, the the entryway window with the fluted glass/1" reed - not the front door sidelights. Larry made forms for the concrete pad for the deck, and has rebar in the two posts, but not for the pad. The pad is partially covering the quarry tile. Also, the old landing's iron railing is sawed off and set aside. But sounds like Larry finished up early today. Presumably, the concrete forms, trenches, and rebar are all ready to go for the cement pour happening Thursday. I'm excited that I'll be likely able to see that. Today was my first day off. Was down at stanford for the LI test. Got back at 2pm-ish. Helped M & S move stuff. The Den is empty (the children have spilled a large amount of drinks over the last few years and you can see it in the hardwood floors. It pains me so. The kid's room is clear except for Z's bed, and rug and some boxes. I believe the dresser will remain. C was down to help and bring his brother some stuff. He was helpful. The storage unit has lots of stuff in it, but isn't looking all that full despite having 2/3rs of the sectional couch and the kid's couch in it. S is a master at packing stuff into it. K went over to F's to have a info transfer of how this and that works. I went later, helped him move the desk (the round coffee table was already moved. Was given some info, then he drove me back over. D, K, M, S hung out, looked at the plans, talked about structural engineering, but didn't make it too late of a night. Talked about the game plan for Thursday. An eventful day. Any day with S around is such. C left and went back up around 7pm. day 011 Thursday, July 1, 2010 Larry was here getting ready to receive the concrete at about 11ish. Don Olney concrete pumping appeared to be on time, but the Ready Mix was about 45 min late. About 12:45pm, and looked to be finishing up around 1:45pm-200pm, and Don Olney drove off at 2:14pm. Larry and Patrick were out at 3pm, Foundation all done. nothing to do but let it dry and have it inspected. D,K,M,S boxed up loads of stuff and took it to storage. Also took a load to Central. F was planning on leaving at 3am for Howard's. 3:10pm, Kerri took at load to Central, M&S's friend Coleen came over and got them, to take a look at a property she's buying or considering buying in Oakland. Her family operates the east west restaurant on Webster. Thursday- Lou/Stucco stopped by around 5 to get his bike. Turns out he's Kirk Diogono's brother. Mike said DKZL should head to the appartment, get some food and get settled, so we did at about 6:30pm. L was asleep before we left, cried the whole way here, then fell asleep as soon as we got here. Z watched 3 episodes of STTNG. day 012 Friday, July 2, 2010 I'm sick. slept in till 9am. K went to get a couple of things, while ZL watched TV. Larry called to ask if the obscure window inbetween the sidelight and the picture window was coming out; i said yes. Larry said his stucco guy would be doing lots of stucco today. I imagine that means the obscure light mentioned above, the dining room window, and the 3 kitchen windows he couldn't get to because of the dirt trenching. Kerri, M&S think the bird, etc should come over sooner rather than later cause they're stressed out because of all the construction. Stanford said negative on LI. The concrete foundation on the exterior in the front yard was all covered with dirt. Looks good. There were some boards brought in that are on the back patio. M&S have both upstairs bathroom clear of everything and the living room is mostly full. So are is the storage unit. The garage hasn't been touched. M wants Kerri and I to work on the dining room. There's not a lot there, but it needs to be gone through. day 013 Saturday, July 3, 2010 D&K @ Swood while kids are @ broadway. working on cleaning dining rm, living rm and upstairs closet. d&k also ran to sub-ter to drop off an 01rieus. d&k stopped by jonas' to see his kitchen, then back to swood to work some more. day 014 Sunday, July 4, 2010 More packing/moving by M&S, D&K. Also went over to Broadway R/C for BBQ with C,R,Bea. large clan of 9/4. Found the shower curtain. day 015 Monday, July 5, 2010 For Larry, off comes the roof. the roof, roofing system over the dining room and the entry way is gone. The siding around the existing bedroom area that's coming out two feet is gone, but the wall remains. Quite the day's worth of work. Larry and 5 guys with a truck. M&S wrapped their part at 2:30pm and took off. All that's left is the downstairs bathroom. Next would be the garage, and purging the storage units. Also, some Edgar Cohen latin translation work: IGNIT AVRVM PROBAT MISERIA FORTES fire gold tests misery strength fire produces gold, misery strengthens Larry said he didn't think we'd be out yet, but since we are, he'll do the rest of the demo while he's got the guys. Said they (M&S) did a good job on getting everything out of there. For tomorrow, D&K to clean out downstairs bathroom and then take a break. Also, to load out the goodwill before 8am. day 016 Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 Got there and put the Goodwill out. Larry was already there and couldn't get the key working on the front door, so I gave him my copy of the front door key. I moved everything out of the den, Patrick helped with the table. He also helped with the large canvas/panel. Went to Lincoln and the kids went swimming. Larry and his guys did a huge amount of work. You can see the rafters in the upstairs bedrooms. day 017 Wednesday, July 7th, 2010 talked to the electrician about den, 2 existing bedrooms, dining room. adding redo knob&tube. asked for as many circuit points as possible in the new 200amp panel. dkzl went to see a movie but i had to leave in the middle to talk to the electrician (above) got a call from permit office. permit is ready for the trusses. paneling is out in the den. wall is open to the mech room. plaster board is out in the dining. plaster board is out in bedroom that's moving. north wall of plaster board is out in north bedroom. knob and tube is out over the dining room. day 018 Thursday, July 8th, 2010 picked up permit for trusses from city hall and dropped it off. larry, p, and an aux carpenter were working on floor joists and braces for the new bedroom and bathroom. And had a 2x8 wrapping around the bayo vista side of the new bedroom. we took off for the day, i think it was just them today. went to see erin etc. got back and had a look around, all pretty normal. chris&iben came to have a look. picked two+ avocadoes. chris&iben moved to broadway today. day 019 Friday, July 9th, 2010 kerri stopped by to do laundry and noticed they had another 2x8 where the 2foot bedroom extension is going to be. day 020 Saturday, July 10th, 2010 larry had us stop by to talk to the plumber about where the controls for the tub will go. the heater guy Tom was there, and his two sons showed up to help him with bubble foil on ducting. John/Plumber was working on the ABS plastic drains for the new bathroom. Larry pointed out the new header above the pocket doors- engineered beam. They've got the new floor for the new suite framed in and the additional 2 feet. Ready to go up it looks like. day 021 Sunday, July 11th, 2010 Kerri was bummbed out because of the kitchen sink being disconnected, and dripping under the dish washer, causing some trouble to the floor by the sink. Kerri plans to speak with Larry Monday about it. Larry and i tried to find the 220 circuit for the range, but will have to have the electricians find it. day 022 Monday, July 12th, 2010 Larry worked on kitchen window near garage. Framed it in and replaced boards from termite damage. added new eng. header. added header under old closet opening in bedroom. kitchen door will be slightly smaller but not enough to notice. there's a one foot wide hole in dining room from bayo vista to the pocket doors on the wall touching the kitchen to get a new header in there. John was there late working on Plumbing. Chris M. stopped by to help me with the gate by the meter. need to move the gate per code. I feel this is within my ability so i'm on that. day 023 Tuesday, July 13th, 2010 Larry and his assistant carpenter got the decking on the addition and another eng. header. (almost all decking). I got the gate moved after work (the one by the meters). Looks like more plumbing took place and more electrical wiring. Also looks like the 220 amp circuit might have been directly wired? but is now disconnected? Mr. Doan thinks they'll have the addition framed in before Aug 1. day 024 Wednesday, July 14th, 2010 another large pile of wood dropped off, probably means they're getting ready to frame up on the addition. decking done on the addition with a very small area open where i believe it's require to be open for inspection or access. more hdu5 ties around the house. John and Kathryn McCarthy came over to see Apult. day 025 Thursday, July 15th, 2010 more ties and a piece of the porch stucco out for ties. day 026 Friday, July 16th, 2010 met with Larry. He did some electrical without checking w me which is ok. It needed to be done. two plugs in the kitchen by the garage and the one outside. larry didn't check w me but it's like RXXxx. clarified the down bathroom w/ larry and the up bath leak, and the up bath window/tile. larry's gonna put a nice lid on the up bath ceileing to protect the room from crap, kinda like a false ceiling. we also talked about the iron on the landing and maybe doing a half wall. we will see. the iron place was on high st. also, larry asked about the windows and the 12x6 or 11x6 window and the 6 inch off on some of them... he also said that 3 of the windows came in and if i clean up some space for them in the garage so we can see them. he also asked that we finish cleaning out the refridge so he can wrap it up. i he's he's scarred of the finish getting scratched. also, he's come around on moving chris' cabinets from the down bath, so he needs us to completely empty that out and he agreed that i could take the lights down. they had an inspection and got marked for the bath drain not being large enough as this year the code has changed where the drain needed for a tub counts as two fixtures. K was over in the evening and noted that the 2nd pile of wood was largely moved to bedroom2. day 027 Saturday, July 17th, 2010 i wanted to measure the windows, uninstall the lights in the down bath, cleanout the garage and finish the fence. all i got to was buying the parts for the fence and half cleaning out the garage. i also made a mess of the old hot water heater, trying to recover the copper. will try to get to the rest of that tomorrow. also needed for us to do is to clean out the down bath cabinet and the refridgerator. we spoke with Tom about the heater and air condictioning. we said we wondered about adding air conditioning down the line in a year or more, he said that we'd want to add the coil to the new heater when it initially goes it as that would be very difficult and needlessly expensive to add later when it could be added now, and would be a small cost, then down the line, a 220v line could be run as well as the copper pipe for the chiller, and the chiller would be added. the unit we're adding is a 3ton unit. seems bizarre as the units in the systest lab at work were until 7/4/2010 50, and (2) 15s, but are now (3) 50 ton units for 210 equipment racks.
